Nomanual is a fashion brand founded in seoul in 2017, aiming to produce new results through constant exploration
and challenges, unconstrained by existing rules. Following the completion of nomanual's first flagship store in 2022, hoffice was commissioned to design their second offline store. Unlike the first store, where the request was for it not to look like a clothing store from the outside, the brief for the second store was to create a space that would welcome as much passersby as possible and provide a flexible, transformable environment.
Composed of two floors, the store features a towering 10-meter-high facade. To transform this overwhelming facade into something more approachable and softer, the primary fixtures on the first floor were installed below eye level. The interior, visible at a glance, piques the curiosity of passersby, inviting them to observe the people enjoying the space and guiding their gaze toward the clothing and accessories displayed within.
Upon entering through the solid and grand entrance, visitors are guided upstairs by a curved display table that directs their flow naturally. Following the monochrome cement blocks that form the walls and floor, they encounter a solid concrete staircase, while the mirror-clad stairwell offers a fantastical transitional experience leading to the second floor.
In contrast to the deliberate flow of the first floor, the second floor offers a more freewheeling experience of exploration. To reflect the brand’s core theme of "freedom," hangers on the second floor are all suspended from a 3-meter-high ceiling covered with a metal grid louver. Moreover, to enhance the flexibility of the layout, the hangers can be freely moved and installed either in straight lines or diagonally across the space, according to the grid on the ceiling. The display zones, which can be infinitely expanded or contracted, embody nomanual’s philosophy.
The vast open floors and suspended hangers invite visitors to stroll leisurely through the space, fostering a sense of freedom and discovery. Some walls in the fitting rooms, resembling rocky cliffs, provide customers with a raw, unpolished experience of freedom, breaking away from the typical confines of traditional retail spaces.
